Domestic Violence and abuse in a home is a cycle. Many times
the children who witness and hear violent exchanges or suffer
abuse themselves will continue the cycle as adults with their own
significant others and children. We believe the children are very
important in breaking the cycle of violence and abuse in a family. |

Facts |
|
|
| ►Children
believe that they are to blame for the violence in their home. |
| |
| ►In
a national survey of more than 6000 American families, 50 percent
of the men who frequently assaulted their wives also frequently
abused their children. |
| |
| ►Children
that are exposed to domestic violence are more than four times as
likely to become abusers or the abused and continue the “cycle of
abuse”. |
| |
| ►Children
that are exposed to domestic violence are more likely to exhibit
behavioral and physical health problems including depression,
anxiety, and violence towards peers. They are also more likely to
attempt suicide, abuse drugs and alcohol and run away from home. |

| |
| Children who have been
affected by domestic abuse and/or child abuse receive assistance
in processing the experience and guidance process. Advocates
provide children’s support group that coincides with Journey’s,
our woman’s support group, on Mondays 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Support group topics include bullying, anger/ temperament issues,
feelings and expressing them constructively, how to resolve
conflict in non-violent ways, and open discussion. Making an
appointment with and discussing the child’s situation with an
advocate is the starting place to arrange individual support. The
child is enabled to communicate what they have witnessed or heard
through art projects and interactive activities. Green Haven
staff will work to explain the child’s specific situation to
school/daycare personnel. Advocates can assist with referrals to
other community resources to help you and your children |
